Friday 18 May is World AIDS Vaccine Day. On this occasion I want to reaffirm the strong support of PES Women to the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), an international NGO advocating the development of preventive AIDS vaccines. Their advocacy promotes vaccines as an essential component of a comprehensive response to the HIV pandemic.
I welcome the fact that Commissioner Reding spoke at the European Parliament’s Women Committee (FEMM) last week. She was there to give an overview of the Gender Equality priorities of the European Commission for the year 2013. This shows that she is open to developing good coordination with the European Parliament on gender equality issues, which is crucial for the advancement of women’s rights in the European Union (EU).
The European Commission released its report “progress on equality between women and men for 2011”. This annual document measures the EU advancements in the field of gender equality.
1 April is an important day for European Democracy; the European Citizens Initiative is now officially in force. As co-rapporteur for the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) I have worked hard with my colleagues to ensure that this innovative tool would be as accessible and user-friendly as possible.
During the last plenary session of the European Parliament (EP), we adopted two important resolutions regarding women's rights and gender equality.
Today, on 2 March 2012 we “celebrate” the European Equal Pay Day (EEPD). This day is an opportunity to recall that gender pay gap is still 17% in the European Union today. Even if the principle of equal pay for equal work was enshrined in the Treaty of Rome in 1957, the reality is altogether different. My message today for European Equal Pay Day is to raise awareness and to mark the countdown to International Women’s Day on 8 March (see below for list of events).
On 27 February the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM Committee) organised a public hearing on the role of women in the green economy.
In an encouraging sign this week in German newspaper Zeit, Commissioner Viviane Reding signed the Berlin Declaration. This is a joint initiative of German female MPs from all political parties, which calls on the government to adopt binding quotas to ensure 30% of women represented on company executive boards.
On 25 January, Mr Sareen, Danish Minister for Gender Equality and Ms Frederiksen, Danish Minister of Employment participated in the session of European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM committee). They presented the Danish Presidency priorities in this field and answered questions of the MEPs.
It was a bad start of 2012 for my country and my fellow citizens. Indeed, on 1 January 2012, as a sad mark of New Year’s celebration, the new Hungarian Constitution came into force. This new Constitution represents an unprecedented danger for democracy in Hungary and for the democratic values of the European Union in general.
